News on 5/7/01:

All lakes in the Waubay basin have risen with the recent spring snowmelt and heavy rains gaining back what these lakes lost during last summer and falls drought.

Bitter Lake's elevation as of May 7 is 1795.16, 2.33 feet higher than the last elevation taken on November 6, 2000. This is the highest the lake has been to date. Bitter Lake had peaked at 1793.24 in April 2000, but a dry late summer and fall dropped the lake to 1792.83 by November. Bitter Lake is receiving 44 cfs of water from the Rush Lake outlet.

Blue Dog Lake's elevation as of May 7 is 1802.75, 1.43 feet higher than last November's elevation of 1801.32. This is close to the peak 2000 elevation of 1802.84, but still lower than the peak 1999 elevation of 1804.29. The lake is receiving overflow from Enemy Swim Lake at 55 cfs, and Hurricane Lake, which spills into Owen's Creek. The current flow for Owen's Creek is 30 cfs, down from a peak flow of 245 cfs during spring snowmelt.

Enemy Swim Lake's elevation as of May 7 is 1854.72, 2.26 feet higher than the last elevation of 1852.46 taken on October 13, 2000. This is the highest the lake has been since May of 1998 when the lake peaked at 1854.85. The lake reached its highest elevation in the spring of 1997 at 1856.27.

Pickerel Lake's elevation as of May 7 is 1846.08, 1.32 feet higher than last November's elevation. The lake peaked at 1846.52 on April 12, 2001, the highest this lake had been since July of 1993. The peak 2000 elevation was 1845.46. Outflow from the lake is currently at 56 cfs. This water flows into north Waubay Lake.

Waubay Lake's elevation as of May 7 is 1802.65, 1.34 feet higher than last November's elevation of 1801.31. This is close to last year's peak elevation of 1802.93, but still lower than the peak 1999 elevation of 1804.05.

Lake levels will be taken weekly until late fall. A staff gauge will be placed on Rush Lake within the next week.
